Miami Sports and Exhibition Authority: Public/Private Partnership with the City of Miami and Everett Clay Associates

Challenge:

• Create an image for the City of Miami through the Miami Sports and Exhibition Authority (MSEA), a semi-autonomous agency of the City, in order to attract major league and minor league sporting events to the City's facilities, i.e. Miami Arena, Orange Bowl, etc.

• Promote the City through the Miami Sports and Exhibition Authority as a convention destination.

Approach:

• Identified potential investors for the purchase and creation of new sports teams and/or the relocation of existing sports teams; identified pertinent meetings and convention business to target for the City of Miami.

• Developed collateral materials and marketing tools and provided media relations support to interest major and minor league groups to consider the City and its facilities and to promote it as a desirable convention destination.

• Organized three exhibition NHL hockey games at Miami Arena.

• Developed a "Save the Miami Arena" campaign centered on the facility's fifth anniversary.

• Supported the internal marketing staff of Miami Arena in identifying, securing and promoting locally oriented events.

• Assisted the Authority in crisis media relations pertaining to litigation issues.

Results:

• Secured the Florida Marlins (MLB), Florida Panthers (NHL) and Arena Football League for the City of Miami.

• Secured Olympic Soccer and the Canadian Football League (CFL) at the City's Orange Bowl.

• Attracted and hosted numerous conventions for the City, including the Pan-Am Summit, International City Managers Association (ICMA), Sports & Events Management Conference and 100 Black Men.

• Arranged interviews with key national media, such as The Wall Street Journal, and MSEA's executive director pertaining to the "Save the Miami Arena" campaign.

• Secured and promoted Midnight Basketball League (MBL) events and the high school basketball championships at Miami Arena.
